June 5th 2008 -If you were one of the few locals who missed ZIMZALA, an art and music charity event held in support of SurfAid International on June 5th, you missed out on one of the best parties of the summer.
It truly was a historical night in the making, as ZIMZALA was the first major local event of its kind, co-hosted and founded by OKOTO Apparel, Jay Alders and Sun Dreams Productions.
It took six months of collecting art from world renowned artists and seeking out donations, both locally and internationally, to result in giveaways as big as a surfboard, a kayak and Costa Rican surf trips.
Walking into The Headliner, guests were greeted by the gorgeous Sun Dreams Productions girls dressed in bikinis and sarongs, leading them through the entrance
towards the walls filled with art, including Jay Alders’ newest paintings that sparked small bidding wars.
Inside the venue and out on the deck there were packs of people showing their Okoto love, wearing OKOTO Apparel tanks, tees and hats. Watching all of this support for these hosting companies made it clear this evening was quickly becoming a success for the proud sponsors.
Guests ate free Surf Taco, and sipped on free Starbucks as they bid on the art and over a hundred giveaways, as Shoreline kicked off the music portion of the night with an acoustic set. Immediately following, Ted Hammock’s up beat performance forced people out of their chairs and on to the dance floor, warming them up for Echo Movement’s reggae beats.
After Echo rocked the crowd with their first performance of the evening, Paula Fuga came on stage to perform her popular set from the album Lilikoi. After being applauded back for an encore, Paula came back with Echo for an incredible performance of Country Road, a soon-to-be released song that has previously only been performed by Paula and Jack Johnson.
It was easy to see how these five entrepreneurs had spread their vibe to over 600 guests. This positive energy resulted in ZIMZALA raising nearly $15,000 as well as a stronger East Coast awareness for SurfAid International, a non-profit humanitarian aid organization located in some of the best surf spots around the world. The buzz from this one night alone will be sure to keep this event coming back year after year.
